In The Garden Of Good Living - Garden Visits Begin
by Pat Hendrickson
My plan to visit the public gardens of Delmarva is now underway. This past month I visited the garden at Burbage Funeral home on the corner of Williams & Vine Streets in Berlin Maryland.

There were some rather ordinary tulips, geraniums, and hyacinths, as well as a small water feature. But one of the most spectacular features in this garden at this time of year, are the huge camellia bushes which are tree sized and covered in beautiful carmine blossoms.

Camellias are part of the rose family and early spring bloomers here on the Shore. They do not have thorns. They do very well here and I have seen them in a number of well established gardens. There is also a very impressive weeping cherry tree that is also quite tall.

These and other trees really make this a tranquil shaded place to rest and reflect. Gardens like this one which have matured over many years are hard to create from scratch. They are based on generations of care. This lovely sanctuary is well worth a visit next time you are in Berlin for a meal or some antiquing. And, there is plenty of free parking nearby.

Garden Planner
  • Plant annual flowering plants

  • Through early June plant:

  • Pole Beans, Peppers, Cucumbers, Eggplant, Lima Beans, Okra, Peas, Potatoes, Pumpkins, Spinach, Summer Squash, Sweet Corn, Sweet Potatoes, Tomatoes, & Watermelon

  • Thin fruits of apple trees by the end of the month, so that fruits are 6” apart

  • Get a rain guage to watch how much water your graden is getting & help plan for watering.

  • Test your soil if you have never done it before to learn more about enriching it. Find out more at:
