There are many beautiful places for the garden enthusiast to visit all of which are not too far away. And, just because the holidays are over and winter has set in, it does not mean that we need to wait till spring to enjoy some amazing garden color.

In Princess Anne, at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore campus, the US Orchid Laboratory & Nursery - a Chinese run greenhouse - has amazing orchids. There you can purchase directly many of the orchids that are now found in garden centers and supermarkets. But it is amazing to see them en-mass and pick out your own unique plant.

The nursery is open all year long to visitors, but you should call ahead to see when their current hours are.

GARDENER'S PLANNER
If orchids seem too ambitious, for spectacular color all winter long try geraniums. They come in a variety of colors. They are easy to grow and propagate.
1. Simply cut a branch and allow it to root for a few days in water then pot in regular potting soil.
2. They like a sunny window and only require watering once the soil has dried out - once a week sometimes less.
3. Give them a good trim every 4-6 weeks and maybe some plant food once a month - though that isn't really too important.
You will have plenty of blooms to enjoy and cuttings to share.
