Delmarva Wildlife: Paddling Assateague

by Dana Kester-McCabe

Paddling is a spectacular way to see the sites and the wild inhabitants of Assateague a beautiful untamed barrier island with miles of beach, sand dunes, and marshland.

Naturally the wild horses of Assateague are a favorite of many visitors. And what better way to see them than from bay? That is also a great place to see nesting osprey and numerous other shore birds.

On the ocean side paddlers can get up close and personal with dolphins, gulls, pelicans and oyster catchers.

Currents in the bay can be strong but the waters are usually fairly easy to navigate. If you are new to paddling there are group tours with knowledgeable guides to help you safely explore the natural beauty of Assateague. They can also point out some of the more timid creatures who live there.

If you are more experienced and looking for a more vigorous trip, paddling in the surf on the ocean side may be for you. Stand up paddle boarding is becoming more and more popular on both sides of the island. And fishing from canoe or kayak is a great way to catch dinner.

If you do not own your own canoe, kayak, or standup paddle board, you can try one of several local rentals on the island itself or nearby. Be sure and call ahead for availability.
