January Garden Planner

by Scott Duncan

January is a good time for doing tool maintenance and planning for Spring.

  • January is a good time to clean up and sharpen your tools. Spray them with water and dry thoroughly, oil moving parts, sharpen pruners, blades and shovels.

  • Keep turning that compost every two weeks to keep it cooking evenly.

  • If we're having a very mild winter you can still plant bulbs as long the ground is not frozen. Believe it or not it's not too late to plant most kinds of bulbs.

  • Set out suet feeders to attract downy woodpeckers, nuthatches, and chickadees.

  • Build or clean and fix your bird boxes for installation before spring.

  • During January there is not too much else that can be done except to dream about what your garden could be and study, study, study. Get books from the library and learn about improving your gardening skills from local experts.

  • We have an amazing resource in our local Cooperative Extension offices which provide very thorough websites. Call them up and find out when they hold classes throughout the year so you can mark your calendar for the next one.
