Matt Dove

by Dana Kester-McCabe

Matt Dove is a painter who also creates furniture from recycled wood and other materials.

Matt is self taught but comes from a creative family. His mother was a painter and his father was a builder, so Matt grew up with tools in his hands.

Matt also had very successful a career as a competitive skateboarder. He has followed a logical progression from skater to artist. Both endeavors require looking at the world with a highly personal perspective.

Marketplace pressure does not drive Matt’s creative process. Mixing media and working with reclaimed materials combined with a love of experimentation are motivators in his work, as is a deep respect for the environment.

A few select times a year Matt opens a gallery space called Punk Rock Fish to showcase his art and that of his friends - many who are skateboarders. Last year they held a show in the Berlin Ice Plant to coincide with the Dew Tour competition in Ocean City. These shows are by invitation and often are organized around one idea.

Matt accepts commissions for paintings, furniture, and custom stained floors. Matt’s work can be seen online at volcom.com and by appointment .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).
