Outdoors This Month: August 2010
What could be better than crabs in August?
Crabbing is a great way to beat the summer heat on Delmarva. Not much expertise, nor equipment is needed. Simply a bucket, a net, a string, and some bait. Raw chicken necks are the most popular. Find out how to catch and cook crabs at this website: http://skipjack.net/le_shore/crab/
Likewise, digging for clams and oysters require just a bucket and maybe a rake, though you can feel them with your feet and pick them up with your hands in the shallow water. Just remember to wear water shoes. Shells can cut your feet in a way you do not want to experience.
This is the month fishing tournaments along the ocean and coastal bays of Delmarva get underway. The most famous of course is the White Marlin Open which is the week of August 2nd this year. Weigh-ins at Harbour Island in Ocean City are generally from 5:30-7:30pm. Check our calendar for a list of tournaments through the fall and links to weekly trends and bait suggestions and local fishing regulations:

The horses on Assateague beat the heat by regularly joining beach goers along the ocean shore during August. Also this time of year, the bucks are in velvet. I saw this fellow near Furnacetown recently.
Between the heat and heavy foliage, birds of special note are little tough to see right now. Some can be spotted on wires like this Eastern Phoebe in Bishop, Maryland. Another good place to look is on dead trees like the one where this tricolor Heron perched near Turville Creek.
Butterfly spotting continues to be pretty good right now. Even the brown ones are pretty. A good place to look is your own garden or back yard and along country roads where you can find them in the wild butterfly weed and other wild flowers.
