Flocking To Delmarva’s Beaches
By Dana Kester-McCabe
The annual migration of summer tourists to join the birds along our shores has begun. Of course a vacation of any sort is great to recharge one’s batteries and to reconnect with the family. But the ocean holds a special power. It can be a place to get away from it all and even of healing.
A trip to the beaches of Delmarva is almost a holy pilgrimage for many.
Why do so many people endure the traffic ordeal of a trip to the shore? It is especially hard to fathom why some are willing to go through this torture weekly. They schlep all kinds of mostly unnecessary stuff to the beach; some of which will inevitably get left behind.
No matter. Once they arrive, the exhausted travelers plop themselves down next to thousands of other people. So much for getting away from it all. But they look out on the water feeling the sun and breeze on their faces. Almost universally can you hear the refrain: “This makes it all worth it.”
So what is “this” they are talking about? It probably varies for different people at different times in their lives. It is a place of young love looking forward to a life together. It is also a place where mature love appreciates the fruits of their labor. It is a moment in time when a big brother realizes just how cool it is to teach his younger brother something.
Something about the sun, and the sand, and the water, is magical. For the young at heart they provide a space with unlimited potential for creativity and adventure. And sometimes they conjure up a moment which may never happen again, or which may be the beginning of something truly amazing.
Like when a family all holds hands and happily faces the crashing waves. Together they stand against something huge and powerful and a little scary.
All their daily fears and squabbles disappear. Everyone laughs and holds on. For one precious moment the world goes away and they are one. Together they are strong, confident, and full of joy.
There is a little bit of all these things waiting for each of us on the beach. Yes, it really is worth the trip to get here.
